[net.music.gdead] Grateful Dead, bimbos and David Gans

<Heavy sigh> Well, I never thought that I would be contributing
something to net.music.gdead, but a book came in themail a couple of
days ago that might be of interest to all you Dead fans (and the live ones,
too). "PLaying in the Band: An Oral and Visual Portrait of the Grateful
Dead" by David Gans and Peter Simon features long interviews with band
members, band history, and a collection of black-and-white and glossy
color photos of the band and friends, with a short forward by Phil Lesh.
It's a large paperback, printed on heavy stock, from St. MArtin's Press
at $14.95. I doubt that it's in the stores yet, but should be available
within a week or two.
David Gans is a music critic working out of Oakland, and a
long-time Dead fan. He nonetheless manages not to fawn all over the
band, and writes alot about the music itself. (Peter Simon is the
photographer)
David is a senior editor at Record, and did a piece awhile
back on rock-and-roll bimbos. Because the piece was referred to in
the press by Madonna and then by Ben Fong-Torres, David ended up
being dragged onto talk shows and the like to talk about the bimbo
phenomenon (much to his surprise).
Currently he is working on a book about the Talking Heads.
