[net.music.gdead] Alpine Shows

wimp@sphinx.UChicago.UUCP (Jeff Haferman) (06/24/85)

WOW! Just returned from one heck of a weekend. What follows is a screwed
up songlist from the two nights. All of the songs are right, but I forgot
the order on a couple of them (I know it's pretty close though). So,
for those of you who are interested in knowing what was played, here goes:

Alpine Valley, East Troy Wisconsin, 6/21/85

Cold Rain and Snow
Ain't Superstitious
Stagger Lee
Looks Like Rain
Mexicali Blues
Mama Tried
Day Job

Women are Smarter

Going Down the Road
Black Peter I'm not sure where Black Peter and
'Round and 'Round 'R & 'R actually were. Dazed out there, I
Estimated Prophet guess.

Comments:

TROUBLE AHEAD--- JERRY IN RED! That's right, looks like Jerry has switched
to red tee-shirts.

It rained a lot the first night, and the band pulled out at least 5 or 6
songs with weather-related verses. Though the first set was about the
shortest I've ever seen, it was played very cleanly. I though the selection
was tremendous!

The second-set was definitely the highest-energy set I've ever seen the
Dead do. Standout selection: Estimated Prophet with Weir playing the
best slide guitar I've ever heard him play. Bobby was all over the stage
for Truckin and Sugar Magnolia; he simply had a great night. I saw
Jerry look over at him once during Sugar Mag and just grin in amazement.

For the second show, the weather was very pleasant (except for the wet
ground from the night before). I was totally straight until the music
hit me -- then my body began dancing like never before! This was definitely
the most impressive show I've seen yet.

First Set Standouts: Stumble and Fall- great way to open a show. Weir
                      was in top form.

It's All Over Now- a definite surprise! The band
really let loose and kicked a** on this one.

Second Set: Keep on Growin!- I hope they continue to do this
one. Brent and Phil sang and it worked wonderfully.
Garcia did a great variation on a Duane Alman solo.
Everyone's adrenalin was flowing strong at this point.

Mr. Fantasy- I thought this stole the show! I've
heard a lot of negative criticism on Brent, but he
put everything he had into this one and it was out-
standing. A fantastic jamout on keyboards. Brent
                     wails!

Now I'm back in Chicago and wishing I were in Cinncinatti, then Cuyahoga
Falls, but I can't quite make them. But I'll see some of you at
Hershey Park on Friday!
