this happens more than it should - i've apparently committed myself to attending a dead concert not knowing where it is. i've only been on the east coast a couple of years and still am not sure where many places are. could someone enlighten me as to the location of merriweather? (i stopped following cars with dead stickers after one night on the way to Providence i ended up someplace in rural Mass. - i made the show and learned a lesson). anyway - assuming i find it (and i always do), I'll see you there. oh - it appears we will have two tickets (grandstand) to these shows. as usual i'd like to get cost but will take less if that is all you have (i will not take more). thanks...rich

The Meriweather Post Pavilion is in the planned town of Columbia, Maryland, about halfway between Washington D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland on route 29, also known as Columbia Pike. The pavilion itself is only a few hundred yards west of the Pike, and if you can make it to there just follow the handy signs marked Meriweather Post Pavilion. From points south one can follow route 95 north to Washington, around the city, but keep on 495 when 95 turns north. Continue three more exits and take the Route 29 North exit, proceed many miles to Columbia and the signs on the left. Route 29 is also called Colesville Road. From points north one should probably follow 95 and/or the Baltimore Beltway (route 695) to 95 south to Washington. Turn right (west) on route 32 and take it to route 29. Now, here is the problem: I don't know whether the 32/29 intersection is north or south of the Columbia city center, so I can't tell you which way to turn. If there is a sign that unambiguously says Columbia follow it. If you have to ask a local, and he is not familiar with Meriweather Post, ask for the city center or the big shopping mall - we usually park in the shopping mall and WALK to the place, it's that close and avoids the parking charges. Plus, there's usually a party in the mall parking lot until the local cops come out and chase us away. From points west one could follow route 70 into Baltimore and revert to case two, above, but there is also an intersection of routes 29 and 70. If you can find it, follow route 29 south and look for the signs for the pavilion on the right. Since I live but a block off route 29, I just go one block east, turn north, and drive a few miles to the pavilion on the left. :-) The party line is that Marjorie Meriweather Post, who donated the money to build the place, is/was an heir to the Post Cereal fortune... **DO NOT HEAD FOR COLUMBIA TOWN CENTRE** I was wrong with this suggestion. Meriweather post is on the SOUTH side of the city. You want to turn on "South Entrance Road" or toward "Harper's Choice". **THERE IS A DETOUR ON ROUTE 32 WEST FROM ROUTE 95** The signs are fairly good, but please find road names and milages at the end of this article. **ROUTE 29 INTERSECTS BOTH 70 AND 40 WEST OF BALTIMORE** If you are coming in on 70 or 40 from the west you can save much time and gas by getting on Route 29 southbound here. I odometered 4.6 miles from this intersection to the Columbia south entrance road. Details of route 32 detour: from 95 take exit 38B west which is route 32. About 1.7 miles from after this you are forced off of the superhighway. At the end of the exit ramp you must make a choice, and it is *NOT* very well marked. ** YOU WANT TO GO LEFT (SOUTH) ** ********** DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GO RIGHT (NORTH) ********** ********** --- --- ********** I tried to scope out the right fork today, and found, to my horror, that not only does it go in exactly the wrong direction (east) but THERE IS NO WAY TO GET BACK - SAWHORSES, 55 GALLON OIL DRUMS, BLINKING YELLOW LIGHTS, THE WHOLE BIT. I eventually found my way back to 29, but this is a hassle you do not need. Okay, so when you get to the end of the off ramp turn left and go only 0.7 miles (under the main road) then a sign says WEST 32 TO 29 and you turn right (west) onto Gilford. Take that road 1.1 miles until you see the sign that says DETOUR WEST 32. Go all the way to the "road closed" sign before takeing this left turn. Only 0.3 miles west and you will be at the 29 intersection, which is SOUTH of the Columbia entrance. Turn right (north) onto 29, go under the still-unfinished route 32, then 2.2 miles north on 29 gets you to the entrance. There is one small green "Meriweather Post Pavilion" sign before the road on each direction of 29. Don't miss it. If you are coming from the north, take the exit AFTER the town centre exit. If you are coming from the south and see the town centre exit, you have gone too far, turn around and go back south. Look for a sign that says South Entrance Road or Harper's Choice or Meriweather Post Pavilion. See y'all there (if my tickets come through).
