[net.music.gdead] That's It for the Other One

jackson@curium.DEC (Seth Jackson) (06/25/85)

I've been reading about "Cryptical Envelopment", the whole "Other One",
"The Other One" with Jerry singing, etc., so I think it's about time
we cleared up the names of these songs and segments.

The entire piece, including both the Jerry and Bobby parts, is
called "That's It for The Other One". This is on the Anthem of the Sun
album. The album jacket lists sub-segments of this piece, but these
sub-names don't match up to any definable segments of the song. Note
that on the album jacket, four names are listed (Quadlibet for Tenderfeet,
Cryptical Envelopment, The Other One, and The Faster We Go the Rounder
We Get), while on the album label, five names are listed (the above
four plus We Leave the Castle). Any attempt to make sense of this
is futile (probably the LSD-induced humor of Mahaganan Skjellyfetti).

The part that Bobby sings (Spanish lady...lilly fields...comin' around)
is called "The Other One". This is the segment that appears on the
skull and roses album, and is listed as The Other One.

The Anthology book created confusion by calling the Jerry part
"The Other One" and the Bobby part "Cryptical Envelopment". The
only explanation for this is that the editor of the book was
confused (quite understandably). However, these names cannot
possibly be right in light of what appears on the albums. Even
if we tried to match up the segments on "Anthem of the Sun", we
could never come up with the matchings that appear in the Anthology.

So, when my friend told me that the Dead played "That's It for The Other One"
at the Greek Theatre, I knew exactly what he was talking about!

The way I heard it is that all the subnames for The Other 1 (ie. Quadlibet
for Tenderfeet, The faster We Go... etc) were concocted one afternoon by
Pig Pen. They do not bear any particular relation to parts of The Other 1,
but were included on the album jacket as the band got payed per the number
of songs on the album. The Dead should consult for defense contractors...

not that it makes much difference, but "Playing in the Band" bears you
out, except that Weir is quoted as saying it was TC, not Pig. He also
says the people who published "Anthology" (the songbook) got it
backwards.

"Anthology" also claims the "Spanish Lady" part (I'm being safe here
-- avoiding all names completely) was written by Jerry(!) and the "The
other day, they stated" by Bobby. I suppose they got the titles and
authors correct, but switched the music?...Who cares...they're both
good songs.

PS: "Sunshine Daydream" is part of Sugar Magnolia. It's marked Coda
    in the sheet music.
