[net.music.gdead] Original vs. Remixed Albums

jackson@curium.DEC (Seth Jackson) (07/16/85)

As many/most/all of you know, there are 2 different versions of both
Anthem of the Sun and Aoxomoxoa. For both albums, there is the originally
released version, and also a version remixed by Phil Lesh in 1970/71.

When I bought these albums several years ago, all that was available at
record stores was the remixed versions. It seemed that the originals
were impossible to find.

Yesterday, however, I was in a record store, glancing through the
Dead rack just to see if there was anything unusual there. There wasn't.
There was one copy of Anthem of the Sun, and, for some reason, I picked
it up to look at the album cover. I noticed that on the back, it did NOT
say "Remixed by Phil Lesh" anywhere on the jacket.

Just then, 2 young Deadheads walked by and saw me holding the album. One
remarked to the other, "I wish I could get my hands on the remixed
version of that album!" Upon hearing this, I questioned them, and they
told me that only the original is available in stores. I was a bit
surprised at this, since it is the exact opposite of my experience from
a few years ago. Out of curiosity, I then picked up the one Aoxomoxoa
that was there, and it *did* say, "Remixed..." on it!

Does anyone have any more information about this?

I am not sure about recent printings of Anthem of the Sun, but the tipoff
used to be the background color and lettering on the cover: the original mix
used a purple background, and swirly lettering for the title. The re-mix had
white background, and normal lettering.

Although I like the original for sentimental reasons, I have to confess
that I find the remix to be better listening. For one thing, it was real
hard to hear Phil clearly on the original.

I'm going to have to check, I have both remixed and not of the
Anthem, but I dont think that the remixed Anthem indicates that it was
tampered with. Perhaps the two young Deadheads were confused over which
was remixed and which was not. I cant imagine why someone would pine
over the remixed version. It must be easy to find in used record
stores. It is the un-re that has always been hard to find. I got mine
from an old friend that bought it when it first came out. I am more of
a deader than he, so he traded it with me for a Weather Report album.

It had always bothered me as to why the Dead (I think it was Bob and
Betty) changed those albums. I had never seen an interview about the
subject. The recently released book "Playing in the Band" quotes Lesh
as saying that it was a real mistake. I couldn't agree more stongly.

The remixes, I believe, were both done by one Philbert McLesh

Haven't posted anything before . . . Wish me luck.

In article <3120@decwrl.uucp> you write:

"Anthem Of The Sun":
Not all of the remixed versions of this albums say so on the cover.
All of the white cover versions and most of the purple cover versions
you can find in stores are remixed versions. Only the early green label
Warner Bros. (I don't remember exactly how to tell these apart except by
sound) and the Japanese import pressings are of the unremixed version.

I like the stereo mix better on the remix; it's generally cleaner
and better balanced. However, I do miss some of the nifty sounds that
were deleted on the remix.

"Aoxomoxoa":
All remixed versions have a note on the back saying that they are
remixed. On virtually every song, something was cut from the remixed
version.
I really enjoy the unremixed version of Aoxomoxoa. "Mountains Of
The Moon" just doesn't sound right without the angelic chorus singing
behind Jerry! By all means, you should beg, buy, steal, or tape a copy
of this unremixed version.
