First of all welcome to the net. Your right. Life on the road can
get to 1 dementional. Even though I've only done it for a couple of weeks
at a time, I can see where the road leads. I remember just before the New
Years shows reading an article in the San Francisco Cronicle Pink Section on
the Dead in which I think it was Jerry who said;" Its not the only thing in
our lives," meaning the Grateful Dead," but its certainly the centerpiece."
Another observation about the Dead sceene is that I don't really see
more of a proportion of Heavy Metal types than other types. I've noticed
more preppies. Maby its because Preppies seem odder to me at Dead shows than
Heavy Metal freaks. It must be Weir's shirts thats attracting them. I thought
of a great Idea for those shirts. I'm going to sell it so don't steal it.
Put a piece of velcro on the tit part of the shirt and stick whatever is in
fashion at the time. Be it a little alligator or a little Polo poney. You
could save a lot of money on shirts every year.
Anyway don't give up there are lots of cool people out there its
just that you don't notice them because of the loud and obnoxious ones.
I've found that even some of the loud and obnoxious ones turn out to be cool
too. At Boreal Ridge this Punker with red hair sticking straight up in the
air offered me a Rootie Root ( Reeds Rootbear lozenge). It cracked me up.
Maby you had to be there, or at some Halloween party, to appreciate it.
I've met some really cool people and I've met some assholes. Its as hard to
say what type of person your going to meet at a Dead show or walking down
the street. This last year there have been a huge ammount of people
introduced to the Dead because of the 20th anaversery hype. We'll see who
sees it for what it is and who gets bored with it and leaves the sceene.
One thing though is that they're there trying it no matter who they are and
thats good. The ones that stay wheather obnoxious or not (or whoever they
are) get the point. The words and music influence they're lives. Its great!
