[net.sources.games] Zork source wanted.

ptraynor@bbnccv.UUCP (Patrick Traynor) (10/30/85)

There has been a sudden rash of questions about the old Zork adventure game
which has made me itchy to give it another go.
Does anyone out there have the source available? If there isn't enough need
to post it to the net (is it even public domain?!?), I'll be glad to send a
S.A.S.Tape to anyone who would take the time. The binaries won't help me
much since I'm on a 20 bit machine.

To the best of my knowledge Zork, including the original, is not
in the public domain. If the original Zork was public domain, then InfoCom
could not copyright Zork I because everything in Zork I was in the original
Zork game.

Zork source is available (under the name DUNGEON) through DECUS.
The database file might be encrypted and in DEC Fortran binary
format, but that's easy enough to fix.

I too would like the sources for Zork, if more for personal pleasure than
anything else. I'm also willing to send anyone a tape for them. Binaries
won't help, unless someone has a binary-to-c uncompiler??? :-)

Okay, I don't want to seem ignorant or anything like that, but HOW??? I don't
understand "through DECUS".

I was swarmed with many requests like the above and even a few people
OFFERING the source. Alas, the source is in fortran and my knowledge of the
language ends with the spelling of the name. A few people offered the source
to me and several offered conflicting reports as to its public-domainness,
etc. One person pointed out that the source has a copyright on it, keeping
it out of the public domain. I noticed that Search and Hack are covered with
copyright notices.

Infocom probably owns "Zork", but there is a look-alike called "Dungeon"
that, as far as I know, is distributed by Decus. If anyone knows for sure
that "Dungeon" cannot be freely passed around, please post a message, giving
the source of your knowledge of such.

Otherwise, I suggest this: Since I haven't the time to learn fortran enough
to do the bit twiddling neccessary to make it work on my machine, perhaps
one of those who would like the source could also take on the job of dist-
ributing it to others who want it via SASTapes. I'm not sure that sharring
fortran source would get good reviews from the net.purists. So, in the
efforts of keeping the newsgroup clutter-free, could the following send
messages directly to me:

a) The person who would donate the source.
b) The person who would take the resposibility of distributing it.
c) The person who knows that it's illegal to do this and will spoil
	all our fun.

Once it's all arrainged, I'll post a note with the distributor's address.

I have a copy of the DECUS dungeon that has been converted to
f77 to run under Unix. It works quite well on split i/d pdps
and vaxen. I'll send a copy for a S.A.S. Tape.
