[net.sources.games] GALAXY -- shall I post?

ejb@think.ARPA (Erik Bailey) (04/22/86)

See, I told you there weren't a line-eater! That line above still exists! :-)

Someone brought up the subject of GALAXY. Well, it looks like a
preety neat game; I have all 10 SHAR files here, ready to post
them if there is enough demand (problably will be, bacause it's
a VERY NICE game). One problem -- I've never played. To set the
game up, the 'install.sh' file MUST be run with ROOT privs! And, as
you may have already guessed, that's one thing I don't have.
But with all the discussion about trojans, don't worry. I've pored
over the code in an attempt to make it non-root, and came REALLY
close to getting it (ie - it compiled), but it requires a USER and
a DIRECTORY for it's own use! So, there would be a username: galaxy,
and a directory galaxy WHICH WOULD BE NEUTURAL TO BOTH PLAYERS. Don't
flame, that's the way it is.

But even for just reading the docs, it's fun. For those who have never
heard of Galaxy, this is the deal: There are 2 players, each in
real time. Each is in command of planets, stars, spacecraft, etc.
Your goal is to annihilate the other player. But it's quite complex.
If anyone feels like porting to IBM, *let me know*! :-)

Well, another multi-player game that I enjoy is WAR. This one is
much smaller - only 2 or 3 SHARs. This is a 2-player, real time,
maze combat game. Try it, you'll like it!

If response warrants, I'll post these this week. PS - if anyone
ELSE has unix (even IBM-PC) multiplayer games, please say so!!!

It takes thought to make a program that thinks.
But it takes work to make a program that works.

Go for it!
