I don't read this group regularly, but hopefully nobody has mentioned this one yet -- the mail messages you are sent after winning still contain embedded ANSI sequences for bold/inverse/whatever. One of these sequences just happens to lock up a z29... Fix? Well, I haven't seen the source code, but I imagine the letters are read in either from an external file or some big string array.
