[pe.cust.wanted] WCS software wanted

vasoll@okstate.UUCP (06/27/85)

Greetings again! Has anyone written any support software for the
writable control store (WCS) under Edition 7? XELOS? We've had this
wonderful feature in our system for about 3 years and are just now getting
around to figuring out how to use it! If anyone has experience using the
WCS (even under OS/32) I would like to hear about your experiences.

Thanks,

Yes. That's what my Master's Thesis was about: Microprogramming Tools for
PE 3220 Unix. I'm not exactly sure how you would go about getting a copy
(I don't have a copy of the source code, actually, only the thesis);
contact the CS Dept. at Vanderbilt University.

They also have some other interesting Masters Theses you might be interested
in; in particular, modifications to Edition 7 so that each user can have his
own WCS image.

My WCS tools were an assembler, linker, and debugger. They weren't of the
same quality as PE products, of course, since it was just for academic
research; but they were used to write a PDP-11 emulator for the 3220, so
they have been given some good testing, anyway.

Actually, Vanderbilt is supposed to be on this pe.cust net, but their lab
assistant person erased the tape I sent them without installing Usenet, so
they won't see your message. If you want to try E-mail, you could send to

and it will get there... lwd is Dr. Larry Dowdy, who is currently
in charge of the Advanced Projects Lab there, and would be most likely to
be able to help you.

What exactly is the writable control store, and if I were
to use someone's neat tools for using it, what would that
get me? Anything in improved system performance?

(We have a 3220 which is gradually becoming overworked, and
I'm looking for solutions. Two possibilities I'll be exploring
are the memory upgrade from Eyedot, and upgrading the CPU to a
3230 with more memory.)
