I have a roland JX-3P. It's a good unit for its price range. Like most of the lower priced synths the piano sound is lacking. The edit functions are quite simple to use and the optional programmers console is not necessary. Most of the preset sounds are very usable the strings are good, still synthetic sounding but good, over all I rate it at about 7 (1-10) for the $1K range. I have yet to use the MIDI for anything but I do use the tape memory function for the sequencer programs and also for tone programs. It works but is slow. The sequencer in the unit has 128 step storage up to 6 notes deep. This is ok but 128 steps is not even a beginning twords what should be available for onboard storage. I'd think that with memory as cheap as it is they could have given much more. There is a add on sequencer for the thing but it costs $600 I believe. I'll get a pc first and use that. I am a guitarist who felt he needed a synth to dub around on and this one does the job. If I had it to do over again I might have bought the Korg poly 800, but who knows? As soon as my TR-707 drum synth comes in I'll post a review. *db* dec-rhea!dec-katadn!bottom
