[net.music.synth] Cassette Culture III-Who to Call....

gtaylor@lasspvax.UUCP (Greg Taylor) (03/14/85)

I didn't really expect as much of a buzz and furor over
reposting my newspaper articles on cassette culture to
the net. But I got it, all right. Seems like everyone wanted
addresses in a big way. I've based my listings here on the
access to publications (which is excerpted from the first
Cassetteculture posting so you check them out, and a few
addresses for distributors (including the places for check
for TOUCH and TRA..two personal favorites). I hope that this
is some help to all who wrote. Here goes:

The mantle of OP magazine has been taken up by not one, but
_t_h_r_e_e publications. Here they are:
_C_L_E_M is the Contact List of Electronic Music. It comes out
twice a year, and is put out by a guy who works in a ski
resort north of Vancouver named Alex Douglas. Alex puts out
a catalog of recordings, publications, and contacts for peo-
ple who do electronic music from all over the world--
literally. It's usually a xerox (the people's publishing)
format, and is a truly dizzying batch of listings. Alex
charges $12 for a year and a half (3 issues), but you can
probably pick up a copy by beating on a local retailer.
Alex's address is: CLEM, P.O. Box 86010, N. Vancouver, Brit-
ish Columbia, Canada, V7L 4J5. This covers everything from
the mainstream to the extreme fringe.

_S_o_u_n_d _C_h_o_i_c_e is one of the two inheritors of the OP legacy.
Any given issue features both feature articles, irate
letters, publication reviews, and lots of reviews of
independent stuff. I've seen copies of their first issue at
a local record emporium already, so I'm pretty sure you can
get it down at the corner. If not, try writing The Audio
Evolution Network, P.O. Box 1251, Ojai, CA 93023. They want
12 big ones for a year, and publish bi-monthly.

_O_P_t_i_o_n is the other post-OP digest of stuff. Their first
issue is probably out March 1st, but I'd figure that it's
pretty much like OP and Sound Choice, since about half of
the old OP review staff went to one publication, and the
other half to another. They're also $12 a year, and probably
also available locally here eventually. If you can't find them
here, try P.O. Box 491034, Lost Angeles, CA 90049.

_C_a_s_s_e_t_t_e_r_a is a new publication that covers _o_n_l_y cassette
releases. It functions as a kind of enormous clearinghouse
for all of the thousand things out there in the galaxy.
Their exclusively cassette format is unusual. Fortunately,
they're intending to function as a sort of "Whole Earth
Catalog" for the cassette culture. Try to find them locally,
or contact them at P.O. Box 893 Boston, MA ditto on 12 smackers
for 6 bimonthly ishies.

Now, on to distributors. CLEM (see the listing above also does
their own distribution on a small level).

You might want to to contact these people for catalogs, information....

Aeon Imports 604 Princeton, Ft. Collins, Co. 80525 303-484-0963.
A *fine* place, run by a nice guy named Kent. He puts out a gourmet
selection of hard to find imports and special stuff from the world.
For all his hard work, he-like Alex Douglas-is especially deserving
of support (y'know-like *user-support* for you software types. Tell
him Greg Taylor sent you.

Cause and Effect 5015-1/2 Winthrop Indianapolis, IN 46205 317-283-5214.
A small and plucky *cassette ONLY* shop. They have a little catalog
and everthang.

Those of you interested in TRA would be best advised to contact
Art in Form P.O. Box 2567, Seattle, WA 98111. They are seriously
committed to Art/Cassette work. Looking for Art stuff in general?
They're the ones to hit up. If you're in the neighborhood, walk
a couple of blocks south and check out Cerulean Blue for great
dye/paper/stencil/fabric stuff (and say hi to Betsy Hasegawa for
me).

I hear that the TOUCH stuff is distributed in some limited form
by NMDS now...as they are trying cassettes on a very limited scale.
If that doesn't work, you might wish to write them directly at
P.O. Box 139, London SW18 2ES, Great Britain. You might want to
try checking out either the TOUCH TRAVEL ISSUE, or the second issue
(if it's still out there) or BALI: the ISLANDS BETWEEN.
