[net.music.synth] Kurzweil's keyboard

ravi@eneevax.UUCP (Ravi Kulkarni) (02/22/85)

There was an article describing this keyboard in the February
issue of High Technology. It is supposed to sound remarkably
close to a real piano as well as having the usual synthesizer
stuff. Has anybody played around with one enough to give a
review? It is quite expensive at $11k but, they are supposed to
be coming out with a consumer version for less than half that
price soon.

It's a sampler with something like a 256 step envelope generator,
since you are local to the DC area, I suggest you hop out to
Venemen's Music in Rockville and try one out.

On the news last night (2/25/84) there was some mention of Kurzweil's
keyboard. According to the program, Stevie Wonder challenged Kurzweil
to design it. The show also said that he used 'pattern recognition'
to get the life-like sounds. What I'd like to know is how one might
adapt pattern recognition to sound synthesis to produce better
sounding stuff. Kurzweil demoed it a bit, and we heard the piano
sound which sounded very good, and a choral sound that sounded
very much like a human chorus.

They area also supposed to have a demo voice that has three stooges
sayings on all the keys.

I saw them demo that voice. The demo I saw was at Sam Ash in Paramus
NJ about a year ago. They claimed that they built the voice that afternoon
recording and sampling from an actual broadcast off the air. There were
three different sounds (if I recall): Moe saying "I'll moider ya" and
very strange "Why you"s and Curlyesque screams. The "voices" were played
back and transposed (accompanied by slower/faster speed along with lower/
higher pitch) using different keys.

Has anyone played with that unit from Decillionix (??) designed for
digital sampling on an Apple? I have some info and a phone number for
a demo recording at home, if anyone is interested.

Yes please, I'm VERY interested in any systems designed for digital
sampling.
