I heard a synthesizer piece on the radio once, a twenty-two minute version of something called "Autobon" or "Audobon" by a group called "Craft". I'm not exactly sure these names are correct, but does anyone know where I can get a recording of this? (this is the twenty-two minute version, as opposed to a much shorter one). -dru

I believe that you are referring to 'Autobahn' by the German group Kraftwerk. It came out in about 1977-1978 I believe, and was released in the U.S. It may even still be in the racks of your local record store. The lyrics weren't to memorable as I recall ... the Autobahn is a major expressway in Germany ... a great topic for a song. -- A memo from the desk of : Larry W. It's probably from the "Autobahn" album by Kraftwerk (German semi-pop synth group). They've had a few albums in the past few years, generally available in the US; I think the most recent inport was "Computer World" (not sure). One can find them in any well-stocked record store. I once had the album, though that was while I was still married, and I may have lost it during the breakup. I find it appalling that there are people out there (particularly those who subscribe to music.synth) that don't know who Kraftwerk are. They have been, and continue to be, one of the MOST influential bands of 'modern music.' And to say that the lyrics have something to do with a German highway is like, ya know, totallyweird man. The bible has something to do with religion. Kraftwerk are THE major precursors of electro-pop, 'Euro-pop,' modern electronic wave, and synth rock in general. Their influence is not only direct - the reaction to regimentation ( though that is/was part of their criticism of modern existence) in music has helped (through misinterpretation as well as understanding) forms like punk, industrial, thrash, jazz et al. to flourish. By all means go get Autobahn as it is historic. Man-Machine and Radio-activity are also remarkable. Their recent stuff has been a litle over-kill-ish, though the big-dance single Tour de France is fabulous. And I don't really even like them that much. Robert Seals - probably the last time you'll ever hear from me - whopee.

Why were there so many postings to this person's question? I found it especially annoying that only the answer was provided in many cases. Everyone who answered quoted the original posting as well. A discussion of Kraftwerk is fine, but the answer should have gone by mail. -- ---------------- Marty Sasaki net: sasaki@harvard.{arpa,uucp} Havard University Science Center phone: 617-495-1270 One Oxford Street Cambridge, MA 02138
