*** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR PATCH *** >Scott Aurenz (ihnp4!uiucdcs!uiucuxc.Uiuc.ARPA!aurenz) mentioned that > "if you use ~1 Hz fixed-frequency carriers (on the DX-7) > you can get some good chorusing effects" OK, all you DX7 owners, here's a small patch mod that I tried out last night in the wee hours of the morning. I wanted to see if Scott's idea above worked (or what it meant exactly for that matter). I punched up the internal "string ensemble 1" patch on the DX7 which is also in location 3 of the Master cartridge. Operators 1 and 3 are used for carriers. So I changed the Oscillator Mode (button #17) on operator 1 to Fixed Freq(Hz). When I tried that out, it sounded like something from outer space (more like ring modulation). Then I realized that the course frequency was probably not what it should be. So I changed it to 1 Hz. This sounded more like it. Then I did the same thing for operator 3. I also changed the Oscillator Sync mode on operators 1 and 3 to "off" so that the chorus effect would not sync on the start of the note. Then I fooled around with the fine frequency of oper. 1 & 3 and I found that 1.622 Hz and 3.548 Hz., respectively, were satisfactory settings. This mod to the strings patch gives you a nice chorus effect which also fattens up the sound from the DX7. I played a few minor chord in progression (Cm,Gm,Am) and I found the chorus effect very pleasing. Thanks for the tip Scott, and I'm looking forward to more of this kind of this discussion on the net. By the way, whatever happened to net.music.guitar? Did the group die or is my site not receiving it anymore or does'nt anybody know it exists yet? -- "Wow! This is intense!"
