I have a good friend that happens to be the chief engineer at Oberheim. Thanks to him, I have had the opportunity to learn quite a bit about some of the worlds' best synths. I am especially fond of the Xpander and Matrix-12, but alas they are far to expensive for most of us to indulge in. Last weekend he brought the prototype for the new Matrix-6 over to my house and we spent many hours going over all the programming features and user interface. I did not get much sleep on Sat. night as I knew he and the synth would be returning to LA the next day. Well, I strongly encourage anyone considering a synth purchase in the $1500 price range to check out the Matrix-6. It has the same sound generating guts as the Xpander and Matrix-12, but a less expensive user interface. It is very nicely done. Quite a bargain considering its features: 6 voices, two DCO's per voice 3 flavors of DCO sync lock touch sensitive on keypress, release and pressure matrix modulation programming ( this is a hot feature! ) FM 99 stored patches 50 split/double patches and much more! Check it out! Phil Cohen
