janzen@pipa.DEC (Thomas E. J. LMO4/B5 279-5421 ECL Test) (05/14/85)

New Music America now has a tentative roster of participants, but wouldn't
tell me if I'm on it or not.

New Music America 1985 will be in Los Angeles about the week following
halloween.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ all this
discussion of records is why I got off net.music. BORING. I thought
this group was for using synthesizers. Perhaps we need a special sub-
group that relates to performing music rather than listening to it.

I went to New Music America in SF in 82. I was interviewing at HP at the time
and was listening to the tail end of it here in Rochester the night before
I went. Well everyoned booed and hissed at all the electronic pieces and
intently listened to two asyncronous musicians(?) that screetched into
violins, threw bolts at guitars and made some sort of random noises with
those instruments.

I left after 3 trumpets bleeted out 20 minutes of one tone sort of off pitch
with each other with sink plungers and a microphone attached to them, they
where not mutes, I know what those look like. It was to say the least pretty
boring. Maybe I went there in the wrong state of mind or something, what
the crowd thought was serious, I thought was ridiculus and/or funny.

Unless things have changed I wouldn't try going to that again. I thought the
lady with the Apple uP did a nice job with it!!

The discussion of recording artists using synthesizers in their work
is directly relevant to use of synths in general. Who better to learn
from, than people who a have employed these devices to great success?
I am intrested in almost all aspects of synthesized music, from producing
it myself, to studying what has gone before. To that end, I have tried
to encourage a variety of discussion in this newsgroup via e-mail and
direct postings.

I'm sorry you find these to be boring, do you know how to use the 'n'
key?

I was told by Carl Stone of New Music America festival Los Angeles
(about halloween 1985) that they now have a tentative roster of 85 composers.
I am not on it.
It should be an interesting festival.
