[net.music.synth] C64 info

Hi persons,

I'm just about to get a C64 (c128 ?) to run some MIDI software on, and
possibly write some stuff for. can any one answer a few questions ?

- Is it better to get a c128 ? How much more are they ? Are they
  compatible ?

- Can I write in assembler/C if I want ? i saw mention of Proline C -
what's this like ? Are there any cross development tools available ?
(running under Unisoft V7+ or BSD4.2). What's it like writing code on the
machine itself ?

- I hear one can get CP/M for the c128 - how is this done ?

- How big are the CBM disk drives that available ? Can I use other
higher capacity disks (e,g 3.5 stuff) ?

- What is the BASIC like ? Slow/fast ? useful facilities ? Any
partucular likes/dislikes ?

- I know there must be oodles of s/w out there. Any particularly good
sources ?

- What are the graphics like ? What facilities - sprites, etc.
Hardware support ?

- Anything else you experts out there can think of

All replies gratefuly received - I'll summarize to the net if I get
any good titbits.
