[net.music.synth] The USENET Compilation Tape

gtaylor@astroatc.UUCP (12/12/85)

There was this project that started out about this time last year:
The creation of "A Little Net.Music: The USENET Compilation Tape",
intended to be the c90 incarnation of the network in all its anarchic
glory. The reason for the languish is partially mine (the interruption
of this important work by my "day job"), and partly due to a lack of
courage, lack of time, or lack of facilities on the part of several
rather well-known net denizens.

A few plucky souls *did* come through, though: Some gagaku music from
Texas, Tom Janzen's relentless "caterpillar blews", work from Bob
Neumann and Nate Stelton, to mention a few. Notably, the range of
stuff was pretty surprising...you might have expected a dearth of
synthesizer noodling, right? Well, there are a number of people out
there doing very different stuff. I even got one cassette from Indianapolis
with no name on it and some good Throbbing Gristle-like stuff followed
by this queasy waltz. Only problem is that I'm the only person who's
ever *heard* this stuff.

Now in a new town with a new job, my thoughts have turned again to
trying to get it together. Here's the deal: Send in a 2-6 minute
excerpt of your own original work on cassette: I'll take as much
of the stuff as I can, try to sequence it (y'know....the thrash goes
between the 12-tone stuff and the Post-Agharta trumpet riffing), and
then give it to the bunch that does duplication for my own little
indie cassette label. I can get us a snazzy, professional-looking
c90 with a snappy colour insert and some liner notes for just a couple
of bucks (probably $2.50, I think). Then you can actually listen to
all those people whose postings you normally "n" right through.

Since neither Toejam Wallaby nor Led Zeppelin or you-know-who is
on the net, you don't have to listen to them. Sorry.

Anyway, drop me a line if you'd like to get in on this. I'll try
to get back to you as soon as I can. THIS TIME FOR SURE! TAKE
COURAGE! DUST OFF THE PORTASTUDIO AND THOSE CHARTS! GARGLE WITH
OATMEAL TO TOUGHEN YOUR VOICE FOR THAT THRASHFEST! DO IT NOW!
