I am starting to narrow my beginning synthesis choice to either an Akai AX80 (to be joined later by a Yamaha TX7) or an Akai MX-76 MIDI keyboard controller and a Yamaha TX7. I recall reading some comments on the net from someone who was using the AX80 with a TX7. I would be most interested hearing what their general impression was of running the two together. Are they sufficiently compatible to use feasibly? What are the "gotchas" of this approach and how serious do you think they are? What I eventually hope to end up with is a keyboard of approximately equal performance to that of the DX7 together with the sound generation capabilities of the DX7 (but with function memory too). Does it make more sense to start with a lower end synth like the AX80, add a TX7 and then be able to produce sounds from two different sythesis technologies (and do some layering, etc) - or would I be better off with a 6 (or more) octave (but soundless) MIDI keyboard controller and a TX7? This wouldn't allow layering but would provide a better keyboard overall (and be MUCH more expensive up front) Anyone who has some input/opinions/experience about this sort of approach is encourage to reply :-)
