[net.music.synth] Pointers to Publications

gtaylor@astroatc.UUCP (Greg Taylor) (01/09/86)

Seems like every so often, someone comes across the
listings and addresses of OPtion and Sound Choice, and
there's always a couple of souls out there who have
never heard of the mags. I don't wish to offend those
of you who *do* know (and subscribe), but it seems
worth it to mention these addresses to those of you
who *don't*.

Basically, both magazines cover nothing but independent
music-of a wide variety of genres, from "new music" to
thrash and all points between. They have immeasurably
altered the course of my life (started me on my "real"
career in electronic music, really-as opposed to this
my day job), I give subscriptions as gifts to people
I *really* care about. You getting the "bias" angle
to all this? I don't do KB-style evangelical postings
to them every two months simply because I do write for
them now, and hesitate to push it (though I don't do
it for money).

Here's the info, though:

_C_L_E_M is the Contact List of Electronic Music. It comes out
twice a year, and is put out by a guy who works in a ski
resort north of Vancouver named Alex Douglas. Alex puts out
a catalog of recordings, publications, and contacts for peo-
ple who do electronic music from all over the world--
literally. It's usually a xerox (the people's publishing)
format, and is a truly dizzying batch of listings. Alex
charges $12 for a year and a half (3 issues), but you can
probably pick up a copy by beating on a local retailer.
Alex's address is: CLEM, P.O. Box 86010, N. Vancouver, Brit-
ish Columbia, Canada, V7L 4J5. This covers everything from
the mainstream to the extreme fringe.

_S_o_u_n_d _C_h_o_i_c_e is one of the two inheritors of the OP legacy.
Any given issue features both feature articles, irate
letters, publication reviews, and lots of reviews of
independent stuff. Since it's important to support your local
infrastructure when it comes to supporting indie stuff, see if
for sale down at your favorite place. If not, write The Audio
Evolution Network, P.O. Box 1251, Ojai, CA 93023. They want
12 big ones for a year, and publish bi-monthly.

_O_P_t_i_o_n is the other post-OP digest of stuff.
Like Sound CHoice, it features columns, feature articles (everything
from thrash interviews to introductions to Turkish music to New
Music America vcoverage (albeit fairly informal....little critspeak
here)....and REVIEWSREVIEWSREVIEWS....cassettes, lps,EPs, everything
from Conlon Nancarrow to Wicky Sears to Poison Idea to you name it.
They're also $12 a year, and probably also down at the corner PVC store.
If you can't find them here, try P.O. Box 491034, Lost Angeles, CA 90049.

Tell 'em I sent you. Won't do you any good, but......
