[net.music.synth] 520ST for MIDI

fft@philabs.UUCP (Fryderyk Tyra) (01/08/86)

The ATARI 520ST is coming out unbundled (just the cpu/keyboard by
itself) this month. ATARI quotes its price to be under $300. It should
available at K-Mart and other mass market stores.
	For more information, check net.micro.atari.

Now that the 520ST is available for a much cheaper initial outlay,
it becomes THE micro to get for MIDI/computer applications.

The 520ST used to be available only in a package that included the
cpu/keyboard, one floppy disk drive, and a monitor. Formerly, the color
package could be gotten for $850 and the B/W for $699. Now that the 520ST
cpu/keyboard can be gotten for less than $300 and can be hooked up to any
TV/monitor, more of us can afford to jump into the computer controlled MIDI
scene with a very powerful microcomputer (we've waited long enough :-).

More likely $350 to $400, but still good.

No argument, soon as some software comes out.

BUT, you still must buy a disk drive! Don't think the ST has a
cassette interface (my new Korg DW8000 reminded me last nite just
how glad I was to get away from those).
Wonder what K-Mart will a$k for a drive?

What you're really saying is: You don't have to buy Atari's monitors,
just some expen$ive cable to mate their weird military surplus
connectors to your existing monitor (or use your TV, ugh).
