[net.music.synth] Mini 4-Track Tape Machines

knudsen@ihwpt.UUCP (mike knudsen) (02/11/86)

Having got used to my new synth, I'm looking at those
cheap (stay under $500) little mini-studio 4-track tape machines.

Please send me any advice or comments you may have.
This is strictly for home use; I don't need to mix
a lot of live instruments.
So I don't need a lot of "quality" or "pro" features
(maybe effects send/rcv, which the cheap boxes don't have).
But I will need to
ping-pong between tracks to build up 8+ - part
arrangmenents from my synth.

So far I've played with a Tascam Mini-Studio (about $500)
and a similar Ross unit (about $350).
The Tascam seems better quality and has better N/R
(DBX vs Dolby B) than the Ross, but the Ross is more
flexible -- can record up to all 4 tracks at once,
whereas the Tascam can do only 2.
The Tascam includes a nice demo tape that actually teaches
you how to use the thing.
Is Ross stuff any good? Tascam is at least well-known,
believed descended from TEAC.

I saved an article some months ago about a Fostex machine--
haven't seen any of those yet, just started looking.

TIA for any replies. And I love my Korg DW-8000.
