Well, I guess lots of people are interested in Mac to MIDI interfaces. In response to my request for MIDI information (Hard and Soft ware), I received many requests for me to post the responses. I also received one very brief recomendation for the Music Construction Set. I guess MIDI info is scarse. For those of you who are interested, the February issue of A+ has some brief reviews of MAC MIDI software and hardware. Also there is a special edition of MUSICIAN magazine out this moth which is devoted to MIDI. Dave Tilley University of Rochester Rochester NY 14627

2 weeks ago I promised to post the diagram for my Macintosh MIDI Interface
in two weeks if nothing bad had happened to my Macintosh after using it for
that time.
Well, nothing bad has happened at all, so I will post the diagram, in
BINHEX form, below. I am posting it here rather than to net.sources.mac
because I know that the potential audience is limited to the people in this
newsgroup, and also because I want to be sure that people using it are
well aware of the way it came about, viz.,
1) I bought the DMCS.
2) I tried to get a commercial interface; most people didn't
carry it, and the one place that knew about it claimed that
the commercial ones had caused some of his customer's machines
to fail.
3) Over 2 weekends I developed my own, so I could have more control
over the hardware parameters.
There is a warning on the diagram to use the circuit only at your own risk;
I've used it for 2 weeks so far on mine with no problems at all, but given
what the salesman said in #2 above, I feel somewhat cautious. I think that
if my Macintosh quit working I could fix it (since the parts that interface
to my MIDI device are standard parts, unlike a lot of the Macintosh parts);
and also I know that my interface at least complies with the published
specs for those parts (although, as I've said, there are also some RFI
filter parts in the Macintosh that I don't have any specs on). However,
being a cautious person, I must warn you along the same lines as the
warning that Dr. Dobbs Journal gave in their "Fatten your Mac" article:
don't use this circuit if you don't know what you're doing. I am posting
it mostly to provide the information on the "unknowns" it took me 2
weekends of trial and error to figure out, and you can adapt or modify it
as you feel necessary.
A few comments on my implementation, though... first, this circuit does
draw it's +5V power from the serial port connector on the Macintosh. This
means it won't work with the Macintosh Plus, and also that it is drawing
its power from a possibly dubious source (some people wrote me to say they
thought that was why the commercial interfaces sometimes caused problems).
If you want to be really safe, you can provide your own +5V power instead.
The 5V power supply is used to run the oscillator for the external clock.
Also, I provide the -5V power required by the clock input pin from a 9V
battery. A surprising thing I discovered is that if the 9V battery runs
out, i.e., if the clock pulses are weak, irregular, or nonpresent,
DMCS begins to behave very erratically -- sometimes it plays random notes,
and also leaves behind the rectangles produced by the "Flash Notes" option
on the screen occasionally. (This also tends to happen if you select MIDI
output without a MIDI interface connected to the serial port). So if
things don't seem to work right in your MIDI interface, and it begins
playing random notes and not displaying correctly, check that the clock
signal is adequate.
Also, if you leave the MIDI interface hooked up and you start up a terminal
emulator program like MacTerminal, it will cause the program to hang, and
you have to reboot the system.
So, with the above comments and warnings, here's the diagram for the MIDI
interface, as a MacPaint document... in the event that I find out anything
new (new improvements or new problems) I'll let you know.
