Frankly, while I'd like to see electronic journalism get more respect (hence
my work with OtherRealms, rapidly nearing its second issue) I haven't seen
anyone on the net whose quality and consistency has deserved a nomination
for Hugo (myself happily included in that proviso). SF-L DEFINITELY doesn't
deserve a nomination either.

Please remember: Hugo's are supposed to be given for quality and
intelligence. Number of readers/subscribers and total volume produced mean
nothing. The net has a lot of (currently unrealized) potential. SF-L has a
LOT of readers and a distribution system most fanzines would drool over. It
also generates a LOT of volume, and tends to say little, which is a pity.

From my early experiences with OtherRealms, I think the traditional fanzine
format can work quite well on the network, and I think you end up with a lot
better quality material overall without wading through the sludge. It'll be
interesting to see how I feel after another 6 months of editing it, but now
I feel hopeful that a real magazine format is viable as an alternative to
anarchy or straight moderation.

If you're interesting in reading an alternative, drop me a line. OtherRealms
is published monthly, so it isn't like getting a regular fix, but I'm
beginning to look at that as more of an advantage than a problem. (and if
you're interested in starting up your OWN fanzine out there, I'll happily
help you get it going.)
