              World's Top Ten Events of the last year and India
              =================================================


              Recently, the Associated Press (AP) conducted an  opin-
         ion  poll  to determine the first ten MOST remarkable events
         occurred in the world in 1984. The question was asked to the
         editors  of  the  foremost newspapers around the world. Poll
         totals were determined by assigning  ten  points  for  every
         first  place  nomination,  nine  for  second, and so on. The
         average was calculated and the rankings are given below:


         (1)  T_h_e A_s_s_a_s_s_i_n_a_t_i_o_n o_f I_n_d_i_r_a G_a_n_d_h_i

         (2)  The Reagan Re-election

         (3)  The Death of Mr. Andropov and the Rise of Mr. Cher-
              nenko

         (4)  The Draught and Famine in Ethiopia

         (5)  T_h_e B_h_o_p_a_l T_r_a_g_e_d_y

         (6)  The Assassination attempt on Margaret Thatcher

         (7)  The LA Olympic and the Russian Boycott

         (8)  T_h_e G_o_l_d_e_n T_e_m_p_l_e S_e_i_g_e

         (9)  Developments in Central America and US involvement


              By the way, Indira Gandhi has been posthumously awarded

         the  1984  Jwaharlal  Nehru Memorial Award for International

         Understanding.
