[net.nlang.india] Devanagiri script font sets, anyone ?

Khana for the line-munching rakshesh.

Does anyone have a devanagiri (hindi, marathi, whatever) font
for a bit mapped terminal ? would deeply appreciate it.
Or if anyone has just tried it out, i would like to know what
kinds of difficulties you had, etc.

There are some interesting problems with accents, the horizontal
line for word groups, compund consonants etc.

If anyone has one for tamil, i am equally interested.

There are several people I know of who have done work in this area.
Pijush Ghosh of the TaTa Institute in Bombay wrote a Metafont
description of most Devanagiri and some Tamil characters. He entitled
his new font Novice Calligrapher's Simple Devanagari or ncsd. He
developed this font while he was visiting Xerox PARC two years ago.
However this font may only be used on Laser Printers and other high
quality printers. Fonts for Tektronix terminals have been developed by
Profs. K. Bryant of the University of British Columbia and J. Hawley of
the University of Washington as part of their work `A Critical Edition
of the Saarsaagar'. Current work is being done by Prof. H. Schiffman and
P. MacKay of the University of Washington on Tamil and Arabic respectively.
Both of them are interested primarily in fonts for publication and are
using Metafont.

Hope you find this helpful,
