<> I recently came across a report on science in India, which I found to be remarkably detailed and very encouraging. It appeared as a cover story in the British journal Nature, Vol.308, 12 April 1984. It's especially appealing to people who have been overseas for a while and are unaware of progress in such areas as Antarctic research, ocean research, food research etc. The sorry state of university science education in general, and the occasional success stories (eg IISc, Biosciences at Madurai) are examined. On the whole, it is positive and optimistic; it helps justify to me the expenditures on scientific research (as in the old question: why are we sending up satellites when we can't even feed our people adequately?) -- ...ihnp4!btlunix!rajeev -- usenet ihnp4!btlunix!rajeev@BERKELEY -- arpanet Sri Rajeev, SF 1-342, Bell Labs, Summit, NJ 07901.
