[net.nlang.india] Indian music in North America

edwardsb@harvard.ARPA (Bill Edwards) (03/09/85)

Is anybody on the net interested or up on classical Indian music,
especially what upcoming concerts there are in North America
(particularly, for me, the Boston area)? I seem to be really out of
touch at the moment, but would love to know. Are Vilayat Khan and
Imrat Khan still extant?

I whole-heartedly second the above request. I've been quite starved
for classical Indian music. It would be nice if we keep others informed
  of concerts in our areas.
Also, does anybody know of good mail-order sources for records of Indian
classical music ? Here in Buffalo, record stores carry poor inventories.

Yes, Vilayat Khan and Imrat Khan are very much extant and active in India.
They've been publishing at least one album a year. I bought two of their
recent albums on a trip to India in Dec. 83. Incidentally, Vilayat Khan's
son Shujat Khan (I think he's 20 or so) has started performing in public
and has cut a disk too. The similarity in styles is amazing (which, of
course, is to be expected). For people like me who love the style of
playing in this family its good to know the tradition continues.

By the way, any Nikhil Bannerjee fans out there ?
