Did anybody watch the documentary "The War of the Springing Tiger" carried by WNET-New York last Sunday after the 'Jewel in the Crown' episode? It was about the INA and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. I found its diatribes (accusing both Netaji and the INA of treason) quite ironic: after all, what Netaji did was almost exactly what Charles de Gaulle did -- join forces with the opponents of the occupiers of his country, form a government in exile, and encourage resistance movements back home. Yet de Gaulle is a hero and Netaji is a "traitor". Poor Netaji, too bad for him he backed a loser! He was probably misguided in thinking that the Japanese had honorable intentions towards India, but you can't blame him for trying. -- ...ihnp4!attunix!rajeev -- usenet ihnp4!attunix!rajeev@BERKELEY -- arpanet Sri Rajeev, SF 1-342, Bell Labs, Summit, NJ 07901.
