I'm glad that this net has taken off on some serious discussion about Indians and our attitudes about India. As ravi mentioned (I think the original poster was ravi) one of the things that affects me is the "biased" coverage of India by the US media. One of the reasons is that the negative image (cf. the 60 minutes show on bride-burning) is much closer to heart. I know that I for one was very ambiguous about the program, and my reaction was "Sure, there is a very serious problem here, but don't judge India solely on the basis of this single issue". However, I'm not very sure that I fully agree about the bias. As in the 60 mins show, most reporters have their facts straight. So what I would like to know, in addition to what we can do about correcting the media- induced stereotypes, is also what we can do about correcting the very serious problems that are pointed out by the media. What you and I as individuals can do if we want to change not just the image of India in the westren news media, but also the reality in India. = Sanjay PS: PBS had a very nice show on the Insat project about a month ago. It was a WGBH Boston programme on NOVA, called "The Global Village". It was a very thoughtful show addressing both the pros and cons of having sattelite communication technology in a principally rural society, where the govt. had maximum control of most of the broadcasting. A transcript is available from NOVA, The Global Village. I don't remember the PO Box no, but it was in Boston, Ma.
