I read, with some fascination, Ravi's article describing the three stages of (what I might call) depatriation. As an Englishman who has been here for a little over one year I recognised exactly the same drift of attitude in myself, though I have not, and will never, reach stage III. I am appalled and irritated by the smug parochialism of American media attitudes. And I am frightened also. A nation as powerful as this, with so condescending an attitude to the rest of the world, appears to be very dangerous; like a wanton child that is posessed of unnatural strength. The frustration is there, too. What can be done to educate the child? Perhaps, soon, I will just go home so that I need not observe this any more. (But then, it won't go away, will it?)
