"India's Computer Exhibition is Hit"

Computer Show in India brings together homw-grown technology and imported
wizardry.

The exhibition, which attracted throusands of visitors earlier this month
in New Delhi, was the big event of the year for the Indian industry and
illustrates the country's rapidly developing interest in computers.
Among those represented at the show were IBM, HP, and Bombay-based
International Data Management Ltd.

"It looks like this government really wants to put the country on the fast
track", says the manager of an Indian computer concern. Last week the
government announced a policy for electronics manufacturing that aims to
create a $7.9 billion domestic industry by 1990. Many Western companies
are confident that India will succeed. Convention participants said this
year's foreign presence was far greater than in the past.

Representatives of several US and European compnies spoke of increasing
sales to India as well as setting up join-venture manufacturing companies.
