[net.nlang.india] Non-British enclaves in India

jpexg@mit-hermes.ARPA (John Purbrick) (06/25/85)

Britain was not the only power with colonies in India. After Britain defeated
France for control of India, the French were left with several tiny enclaves
(Mahe, Karikal, Pondichery, Chandernagore and Yanaon). What became of these
when Britain left India? Did France voluntarily relinquish them? And why did
they all become part of one widely-fragmented state which included them all
(except Chandernagore?)? Do these areas retain any significant French
influence?

Similarly, there were three Portuguese enclaves: Goa, Diu and Damao. Did all
three stay Portuguese until India seized Goa (the only one I know about)?

There was one additional enclave--Gwador, now in Pakistan, owned by Oman. Does
anyone know anything about its history?
