			About the Award
			===============
The Gov't of India instituted the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for

Prime Minister. The Award is made by a jury appointed by the
Gov't of India. The jury consists of the Vice-President of
India, the Chief Justice of India, one chief justice from a
State High Court, one vice-chancellor of a university, one
person representing the press, and two emminent persons from
public life in India. The Award carries an amount of 250,000
rupees (Rs. 250,000) which is convertible into foreign cur-
   rency.

Since I'm not familiar with all the names on the table above,
would someone like to help me with their identities (like who
they are & why they were considered for the Award)? Looking
at the above list, one could possibly believe that some of the
   choices were politically influenced.

Sunil did a good job by posting this list. I would very much like to
have a fully compiled list with introduction of the receipients of the
award. I have added what I knew about some of these personalities. Please
add about the others and feel free to edit the misinformation by me. I
hope to find the details (about the others) and add in here.

Sorry to be of absolutely no help, but I must point out that
King was assassinated in 1968 (March?), a few months before
Bobby Kennedy (June). It would have been politically
embarrassing to give him a posthumous award before his death.

My father was in Zambia last year, and I am certain that he said that
Kenneth Kaunda was the president of that country. Could someone comment on
this please.

As noted to me by Eric Ossiander, Kenneth Kaunda is the President
of Zambia, not of Kenya. No, Kenneth Kaunda did receive the
Nehru award. I made the mistake of calling him the President of
Kenya. Like I said in my original posting, I'm sure there was
at least a little politics involved in the selection of some of
the Award winners (especially political figures like Kenneth
Kaunda). I'm surprised that a followup stating this error on my
part was not brought up on net.nlang.africa. And again, thanks
	to Eric for the correction.

Kenneth Kaunda is the president of Zambia and not Kenya.
In 1970, Kenyata was the president of Kenya.

Kaunda is indeed the Zambian leader. The president of Kenya in 1970 was Jomo
Kenyatta, who led the country from independence from the British until his
death in the mid 1970s. The current Kenyan president is Daniel Arap Moi

Hope this helped
