Not an especially bad Wimbledon for Indians: Vijay Amritraj got to the round of 16 by beating Yannick Noah (who was seeded 9th, I think). Vijay played well against Noah, and, as is usual with him, very sportingly. He also clowned around a little and was very popular. As is also usual with Vijay, especially after winning a big match, he lost in the next round in straight sets, to Heinz Guenthardt of Switzer- land. Ramesh Krishnan played Connors in the 3rd round, I think. He took a set off Connors and served for the third set at 5-2. He proceeded to lose the 3rd and 4th sets 7-5, 6-2. Krishnan has excellent ground strokes, very solid and consistent. Nice touch play, too; he passed Connors at the net several times. His biggest problem is a patsy serve which he seems to be lazy about. Looking at him serve, it seems that if he just put slightly more effort into the stroke, he would have a much more powerful serve. As it stands, his serve is not worthy of club or high school play, let alone Wimbledon. I don't remember seeing any other Indians entered at Wimbledon: I guess Anand Amritraj and Sashi Menon have slipped too far down the rankings to get an entry there. In any case, noone, not the Indians or anyone else, could have stolen the spotlight from Becker, who looks like he will be the next Borg. Too bad for Curren that he had to make it to the finals at the time Becker got there too. cheers, Dilip. TI/Austin. dsouza@ti-csl.
