[net.nlang.india] Settlement with Sikh leaders reached

sivan@aero.ARPA (Sivan Mahadevan ) (07/25/85)

Today, the NY Times reported that Rajiv Gandhi has reached a settlement
with Sikh leaders regarding Sikh demands. Rajiv gave in to many Sikh demands
the most important being changing the boundaries of Punjab and Haryana.
Chandigarh will now be only the capital of Punjab (a new city will be the
capital of Haryana). In an attempt to give the Sikhs more power in Punjab,
many areas of Punjab and Haryana will be exchanged thereby making Punjab more
of a Punjabi speaking state and Haryana more of a Hindi speaking state.

Personally, I'm not too happy with this news, but then that's my
opinion.

To me, it sounds like a very reasonable thing to do.
I would rather hear from folks who happen to come from the
respective areas.
