Another good one was recommended by ...

> Return-Path: <wanginst!raghavan>
> ...
> There is another book on the partition problems; by K.A. Abbas titled
>
> "GARAM HAWA".
>
> (This was also the basis of the movie of the same name).
>
> Sandhya Sridhar.
> w/o Dr. Sridhar Raghavan.

Looking at some of the names/titles posted, following also come to mind ..
Just like S. Radhakrishnan, K. M. Munshi (Bhavans Institute, Bombay) has
written extensively on Indian philosophy.

Another genre of fiction belongs to Jim Corbett- populated with tigers and
hunters in the Sunderbans.

For Anita Desai fans, her latest- IN CUSTODY was reviewed in TIME (Jul 1),
"compassionate, comic" summer reading ...

And lastly, SIDDHARTHA by Herman Hesse (not as good as his GLASS BEAD GAME).

Thanks to all those who responded.

While I was in India a few months ago I read this book entitled "India:
The Siege Within" by Akbar. The book was written early this year and basically
tries to compare things like the 1947 partition, E.V. Ramaswamy Naikcer's
anti-Hindi rally during the 1950's, etc. with the present day problems in
Punjab and Kashmir. The book is well written and quite popular among my Indian
friends here.
