Recently I saw several querries about rules governing non-resident
Indians wanting to return to India. I will not try to post all the
rules here because they are long and change some what from time to
time. I do suggest that those serious about it get in touch with
the Indian consulate nearest to you. Folks here in the San Fransisco
consulate have been very helpful to me on that count. I have been
able to get copies of rules about baggage allowance for visitors
(ala customs etc), rules about transfer of residence and tax laws
for non resident Indians etc. from the San Fransisco consulate
on a simple phone call. Don't call San Fransisco though if they
do not have jurisdiction over area of your residence. Call the
consulate with proper jurisdiction.
