If any of you netters show up in NYC and want to eat good (North) Indian food cheap, go down to 6th St. between 1st and 2nd Avenues in the East Village. The entire street consists of Indian restaurants! Strictly speaking, they are Bangladeshi, because it appears several families from Bangladesh immigrated and opened up these restaurants, of which there are at least a dozen all in the space of a city block. The prices are extremely competitive, the most expensive entrees being no more than about $7 (you can expect to pay 2 to 3 times as much uptown). The service is decent, and the ambience is not bad. All in all, it's really worthwhile. Snags: it's rather difficult to park in that area. It's also a bit hard to get to by subway, unless you're willing to walk a few blocks. The area is also quite Bohemian, which may be good or bad according to your point of view: bunches of artists, people with pink hair, etc. I have eaten at several of the restaurants there: Mitali, Gandhi, Sonali, Pubali,... and they're all reasonable. I am in no way associated with these businesses, expect that I like to eat cheap! Enjoy! Sri Rajeev. (Generic disclaimer)
