[net.nlang.india] Public hanging stayed

bala@purdue.UUCP (Bala Krishnamurthy) (12/18/85)

I have the latest "HINDU" from Madras here and here are a few
interesting bits:

1. Court order for hanging in public stayed:

The Rajasthan High Court order in regard to hanging in public of
two persons sentenced to death was stayed by the Supreme Court.

A writ petition filed by K. Parasaran (Attorney-General)
questioning the constitutionality of hanging in public was
admitted (under Article 21 of the constitution).

The petition was directed against the manner of carrying out
the sentence of hanging in a public place and was not concerned
with the facts and merits of the particular case.

2. Gould Power Node-6000 series to be manufactured in India:

Jeffrey Allen, Gould Inc's S.E.Asian VP, has said that the
license for technology transfer has been approved by the
U.S. Dept. of Commerce. Gould Inc's bid was to enter into
a collaborative agreement to manufacture the Gould Power Node-6000
series of super-mini computers and develop related specialised
software.

On a related note, the Indian government has requested permission
for the import of a Cyber-205 for the monsoon project under way.
The matter is under "active consideration" in Washington.

3. No religion involved in National Anthem:

A division bench of the Kerala high court has held that the singing
of the National Anthem (Jana Gana Mana) does not violate religious
freedom of a citizen guaranteed under Articles 25 and 26 of the constitution.

The court held that the Headmistress of the NSS school, Kidangoor, Kerala
was justified in insisting upon the Jehovah's Witnesses students to sing
the National Anthem during the morning assembly.

To one and all: Happy holidays!

Cheers,
bala
