Public hanging report confirmed
-------------------------------
The recent report in this newsgroup about the public hanging
incident in India is true. However, the hanging has not yet
been carried out.
Two people (one of whom was a woman) were found guilty on
charges of burning a bride to death for not bringing enough
dowry, by the Rajasthan Supreme Court on November 29. The Court
decision said that they should be hanged either at Ramlila Grounds
or at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur as a deterrent to
others involved in this cruel practice.
The Supreme Court, however, stayed the order while admitting
a petition from the Attorney-General questioning the constitutionality
of the decision. The case is yet to be decided.
Ironically, the sessions court had initially given a life
sentence to one of the convicts, but when he appealed it, he got
a public hanging sentence!
