A friend of mine will be going to India for a 6 week vacation in June. I remember that there was a discussion on ticket agents, low prices etc. If some one had recently made a survey of this matter, or had a personal experience, I would like to know. Thanks in advance. The prices quoted for a round-trip ticket from Chicago to Bombay is about $1150. With the crude oil prices coming down so sharply, some airline must be offering a better price.

I just bought tickets for going to India. The round trip fare by Air-India (discounted by the local travel agent) is $1,075. This fare is for NYC-Bombay/Delhi round trip. In addition to this, there is a $15 surcharge for week-end flights (leaving on Friday or Saturday) and a $3 airport tax. Some agents in the New York news paper India-Abroad have advertised lower prices for chartered flights. I also know someone who has found the cheapest way to go to India. Fly to -kkAmsterdam by Peoples and then to New Delhi by Aeroflot (The Russian Air Line) via Moscow (free overnight stop). The catch is that (in winter) Moscow airport may be closed due to bad weather. The cost is less that $1,000. - Rajesh Dube.

Flying to Amsterdam on People's may be difficult, as they only fly to London and Brussels in Europe. A train from Brussels to Amsterdam is rather inexpensive, though, and I suspect that Aeroflot flies out of Brussels as well. -- James C.
