Hello:

Some friends of mine and I are planning to
arrange a speaking tour of
Dr. Rajni Kothari in North America sometime in April. As some of
you may already know, Dr. Kothari is a well known
political scientist and an author of many books and
articles on India. He is also on the editorial board of
many international journals, ALTERNATIVES being
one of them. A few months ago, I had circulated
on the net one of his articles on communalism
and electoral
politics that appeared in the Illustrated Weekly.

Dr. Kothari is a professor of political
science, the Director
of Center for Developing Societies in Delhi
University, the President of People's Union of
Civil Liberties (PUCL), and the founder of
Lokayan, an umbrella organization for
grass-roots movement in India.
Lokayan and he were recently awarded the Right Livelihood Prize,
a sort of alternative Nobel Prize set
up by a Swedish-German writer Jakob von Uexkull.

If any of you, India Association, your department
or your friends would like to have Dr.
Kothari visit your campus and speak, please let
me know. You will have to arrange to contribute
to cover his round-trip
transportation within North America and living expenses; it will be
nice if you can also contribute some money to
cover his transportation expenses between India
and NYC.

Dr. Kothari can speak on any of the
following topics:

 1. Evolution of Grass roots organizations in India
 2. Human Rights Situation in India
 3. Rajiv Gandhi and Political Climate in India

and possibly other topics.

If you would like to help us in any way in
planning Dr. Kothari's visit, please contact me:

Thanks
