This file contains the binhex-ed version of three Chess fonts.
With these fonts it is possible to create a chess board, in any
required "connfiguration". I created the font after I found out that drawing
a board in McWrite cost me at least 30 minutes, with questionable results.
The Fonts can be installed with the Fonts Mover. The Chess fonts are defined
with Fonts number (210 (*128) +Z) where Z is 12, 18 or 24 - the three
different sizes of the font. I have created three sizes, because up and down
scaling does not work very well for pictures.
To use the fonts, to create a chessboard (in McWrite or McPaint) use the
following keys:
r for a rook,
h for a horse,
b for bishop,
q for queen,
k for king,
p for pawn and
0 for an empty field.
Yes, yes, ofcourse I know that we don't call that animal a "horse". The more
common abbreviation "n" for knight was however not possible. I will explain
that later.
When you just hit the key, it will produce a white piece on a white field.
Pressing the same key, in combination with SHIFT, will give you a black
piece on a white field. Using the same key in combination with OPTION,
produces a white piece on a black field, and (you guessed it) using both the
SHIFT and OPTION keys will give you black on black.
The reason I used Horse in stead of kNight is because the letter n, in
combination with the OPTION key, is used for a special purpose. I don't know
the glory details (could somebody fill me in?), but I think it is used as an
escape sequence, because OPTION-n does not print anything, and the process
(any process, even KEYCAPS) waits for the next key, after which it displays
the correct field, but not in all cases, depending on the second key.
Thats why.
One more remark, for when you would like to print a chessboard. When
printing from McWrite, use the "Tall Ajusted" option from the dialog box, if
you like things to be "square".
Use of this font is free, as long as recognition, credit etc.
