One idea that someone (Henry Spencer? Geoff Collyer? me? I forget) kicked around here was: there is too much to read in net.unix-wizards and too much of it is trash. there wasn't any disagreement. The suggestion was made to divide the world into groups and have a different moderator who moderated the input in each area. That way you wouldn't have to wait 10 days to get a reply on ``how come my vax is crashing with this weird message''. [But it would sure encourage people to mail replies...]. I think that Henry volunteered for danger-duty -- but then we may have volunteered him. If he wants out, I'll do it. The idea was to keep mod.unix-wizards distinct from net.unix-wizards, not to replace one with the other. Like a lot of interesting ideas, we never got around to doing anything with this one -- partly because somebody else created mod.unix-wizards and we wanted to see what would happen with it. So far, not much. Anybody like the idea of this experiment? Anybody else willing to try it? Right now i can see several problems -- the duplication of answers will continue (so you get one from each region, rather than 10 from some regions... still it's an improvement) and what is going to happen to people who aren't in a region? There may be a problem in finding enough moderators (though for unix-wizards, I doubt it). But I think the speedup will be worth it. I'm not going to Dallas. Send me mail about this if you are interested. Laura Creighton utzoo!laura
