*** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR GARBAGE *** When I first read the dire WARNING implying that stargate meant the end of unmoderated news groups, and probably meant the end of unpopular or non-work- related news groups, naturally I was upset. Know I don't know what to think. While it is true that we all have the option of continuing to go with UUCP, there are some problems with this. Purely from a logistics standpoint, the disappearance of all or most of the central "vortices" from the UUCP net would probably permanently destroy any hope of continuing more than "local" usenet via that facility. (Obviously, the stargate sites won't drop off the UUCP map entirely, but they will for the purpose of forwarding old-style news.) I have no objection to the basic premise of stargate, or even the presumed moderation, as long as: 1) I can still post what I want, when I want (even if its logged). 2) Ridiculous (seeming) news groups like net.flame survive. 3) There is no basic change in the "quality of the news." By this I mean the net should retain its flavor as a forum of individuals, and not become just a collection of boring, dusty, old moderated news groups. End o' screed. -- "I have a hard time dealing with reality. Fortunately I've managed to avoid it most of my adult life." tmq Software/ICOM systems Andrew H.
