[net.news.stargate] trademarks

lauren@vortex.UUCP (Lauren Weinstein) (06/01/86)

I think some people may be confusing some issues here. (As an aside,
clearly Datapoint wasn't concerned about the possible existence
of a videogame with the same name as their product, if such was
actually the case.)

There are differences between service marks and trademarks. There are
differences depending on the exact names used. For example, how
many products/services can you name that have the word "Star" in their names?
A case in point: My local bank is now interconnected to a major
interbank ATM network called "Star System" or some such. And of course
there's the "Xerox Star," etc., etc.

The point I'm making is that in most cases, there is a difference
between:

Foo
Foo Bar
The Foo Bar Network
The Foo Bar Service
... etc.

In any case, this whole issue is being passed along to people who
have the facilities to research the details properly. Persons
who wish to discuss this further should contact me directly
via network mail. Thanks.
