"I don't give a Damn." (I never was sure which part of that phrase was the shortstop's name.)

"I don't give a Damn." (I never was sure which part of that phrase was the shortstop's name.) There used to be (in the 1890s) a character in St. Louis who was known as "Don't Give a Damn". He earned this nickname by going to Paris just to order a drink. I believe, without checking sources, he was related to Tom Turpin, the ragtime piano player. The story may be found in "They All Played Ragtime" by Rudi Blesh.

Sorry, I just listened to the tape. At least on my version, the shortstops name was "I dont give a DARN". (not DAMN) Im not sure whether I was subjected to censorship (this is Canada, after all) or whether utcsrgv!burt was extrapolating. For trivia fans, can we name the others? I will post to the net after a few days with the names from the tape I have. Michael Wagner (decvax!utzoo!wagner)

----- News saved at Tue May 18 01:40:34 1982 The show "Hollywood: The Gift of Laughter", seen this week on ABC(?), showed Abbot & Costello doing a shortened (or cut) version of "Who's on First?". They used "I don't give a damn." and they were behind an NBC microphone.
