[net.misc] My comments on hackers

cw (06/07/82)

Flannel shirts and boots are fine; thinking is dandy.
I like people who think of puns like Funkin' Wagnalls.

And I mentioned that some self-described hackers are probably too
modest for their own good.

Strikes me that Andy Tannenbaum might be one (certainly that has
been my impression from his previous net contributions).

I was also struck by the definition of hacker as one who patches

    begin ... end;

until it works. Would Andy like to stop the polemics for a moment and
describe his own working methods so that we can see what is good
and bad about hackers/

By the way, I carry a plastic pen case. Not because I use HIPO diagrams,
but because it keeps my good fountain and technical pens from leaking
in the low pressure of air planes. Or, if they do leak, they don't leak
on me. You see, I like my tools as well and I take care of them too.
